Culture deserves stories, not headlines.
The Gulf and wider SWANA region are continuously undergoing significant cultural transformations. As a new generation of creatives redefines how the region is seen, these changes remain underrepresented and framed solely through headlines, or buried under stories of economic development that disregard the people driving it.
Qissah Culture Lab was created to document the evolution of cultural movements and landscapes in a region that is often overlooked or only superficially understood.
People lay at the core of each project. Qissah puts conversations, observations and field research at the forefront, using them as a means to explore and further understand the ideas, experiences and creative practices shaping culture and creativity across the Gulf and wider SWANA region.
Global interest in the region is continuously growing, yet rarely scratches the surface. As creative landscapes develop, there is a growing need for thoughtful and authentic cultural understanding. Qissah believes meaningful insight begins with stories that come directly from the people who create the culture.
Qissah Culture Lab hopes to become a trusted independent platform documenting the creative evolution of the region through building a lasting archive of the people, ideas and cultural movements that continue to shape it — one that is built on genuine curiosity and passion.
Qissah Culture Lab is founded by a journalist and researcher with a background in arts, culture and the creative industry, having worked across Europe within arts and cultural spaces and engaging with artists across all disciplines.
Alongside journalism and research, a personal background in several artistic disciplines has shaped a deeper appreciation for the significant role creativity plays in expressions of identity and shaping communities. This appreciation informs Qissah’s approach: looking beyond surface-level trends and perceptions to understand people, experiences and cultural contexts that drive the meanings behind creative work.
Qissah Culture Lab was created from a recognition that many global narratives surrounding the Gulf and wider SWANA region fail to fully reflect the complexity, diversity and creativity of the individuals and creativity that shapes these societies. Through documentary storytelling, cultural research and first-hand conversations, Qissah aims to document these evolving cultural landscapes while creating a deeper understanding of the way in which the region’s creative and cultural landscapes develop. The hope is to create a lasting archive of contemporary culture — one that preserves voices, ideas and creative movements that shape the present and future of the Gulf and SWANA region.
